Grace Brewster Hopper (née Murray; December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy Rear Admiral. One of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, she was a pioneer of computer programming who invented one of the first code linking routines. In 2024 we will offer ‘Officer Training’ to our ‘newly’ elected AND veteran officers and volunteers; as well as any IEEE member, at any grade level or position. Our wish is to help all gain a fuller awareness of the communication and management skills used within the IEEE, how they function and how to employ them both as IEEE officers, and in your everyday work and life. These are referred to as ‘soft skills’ in that they are not based on the physical principles we all learned as we worked toward our engineering degrees. They are psychological, organizational, interpersonal and their training requires that they be ‘learned’ in two associated ways.The first part is an appreciation of the principles and techniques involved. That is usually part of a class or study covering the basics (theory) of the method. That part we intend to offer in the form of ‘on-line’ classes and reference study material.The second part requires putting the ‘theory’ into active practice. We often liken this to learning a sport, such as playing a game of tennis. No amount of ‘book study’ can teach you how it feels to swing a racket, or how to know when your swing connects perfectly, and the ball goes exactly where you intended. Measuring electricity access is an expensive and difficult undertaking, fraught with error and missingness. Leveraging computational analysis of remotely sensed data across thousands of nights, we generate indicators of electricity poverty across the globe at the settlement level, improving spatial resolution and filling in temporal gaps. We demonstrate the reliability and validity of these classifications against ground-based surveys at multiple scales. We estimate the energy poor population is 1.17 billion, 60% higher than the official global estimate of 733 million lacking electricity access. Most of the world’s energy poor live in areas that are more remote, less densely populated, and more rugged than energy abundant areas. In 2024 we will offer ‘Officer Training’ to our ‘newly’ elected AND veteran officers and volunteers; as well as any IEEE member, at any grade level or position. Our wish is to help all gain a fuller awareness of the communication and management skills used within the IEEE, how they function and how to employ them both as IEEE officers, and in your everyday work and life. These are referred to as ‘soft skills’ in that they are not based on the physical principles we all learned as we worked toward our engineering degrees. They are psychological, organizational, interpersonal and their training requires that they be ‘learned’ in two associated ways.The first part is an appreciation of the principles and techniques involved. That is usually part of a class or study covering the basics (theory) of the method. That part we intend to offer in the form of ‘on-line’ classes and reference study material.The second part requires putting the ‘theory’ into active practice. We often liken this to learning a sport, such as playing a game of tennis. No amount of ‘book study’ can teach you how it feels to swing a racket, or how to know when your swing connects perfectly, and the ball goes exactly where you intended. Those elements of a skill only come with practice!Classes:As an introduction to the ‘theory’ portion of these skills, we will offer a set of virtual classes supported by study materials available through the (https://r4.ieee.org/sem/) and the (https://ieee.learningpool.com/) The virtual classes will begin in the 2nd week of January 2024 and conclude end of February of that year. John Ockenfels and Peter Teahen’s Flight to End Polio took three months to circumnavigate the globe. Getting their single engine Cessna 210 off the ground took three years. In our April 2023 Tech Talk, John Ockenfels and Peter Teahen gave a presentation on the preparations for the flight. In this month’s Tech Talk, they will give a presentation on the three-month trip to circumnavigate the globe. On 30 July, after traveling about 26,000 miles, Teahen and Ockenfels landed safely at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. Along the course of their flight, they had participated in 24 fundraisers (the money raised there has yet to be tallied). Often viewed thru the lens of the Cold War (an incorrect perception by the way), over the last decade it has come to be known as a trust worthy nuclear partner and growing customer for western nuclear technology. The genesis of the current state of India's nuclear energy strategy can be easily traced to Homi J Bhabha (HJB) who was a well known contemporary of the famous physicists and scientists of the 1930s - well before the outbreak of WW-II.Soon after India gained her independance from the British empire in 1947, HJB pioneered a massive movement towards fundamental scientific, mathematical research in India and laid the foundations/ground work for its present day progress. Most current leaders of India's nuclear industry were all hand picked by HJB and bought into his vision. To understand this more intimately, this talk will reflect on his life and contributions as well as briefly touch upon his vision. A Consultants Committee Virtual Meeting In early 2022, the (https://ieeeusa.org/committees/aicncc/) polled local consultant network chairs to find out the status of their local groups. What we learned is that many local networks were having trouble restarting activities after having such a long layoff from in-person meetings. We also learned that many chairs have questions about activities of the IEEE-USA Consultants Committee. On January 25 at 12:00pm-1:00pm EST, the IEEE-USA Consultants Committee is again sponsoring a virtual workshop for local consultant network chairs. We have asked Dr. Johannes Schaefer, Senior Manager with IEEE Strategic Research and author of the (https://ieeeusa.org/product/ieee-usa-consultants-fee-survey-report-2023-edition/) to give a presentation on key findings from the report. Dr. Schaefer will be joined by members of IEEE-USA Consultants Committee to add their commentary about the impact on independent consultants from findings of the survey. While the field of advanced packaging is undergoing revolutionary technology advances today, there is little doubt that advanced packaging in the new era of Moore’s Law will offer extreme levels of die integration/bonding and begin to blur the boundary between on- and off-chip connectivity (especially in 3D architectures) due to ever denser physical I/O interfaces/bonds. In 2024 we will offer ‘Officer Training’ to our ‘newly’ elected AND veteran officers and volunteers; as well as any IEEE member, at any grade level or position. Our wish is to help all gain a fuller awareness of the communication and management skills used within the IEEE, how they function and how to employ them both as IEEE officers, and in your everyday work and life. These are referred to as ‘soft skills’ in that they are not based on the physical principles we all learned as we worked toward our engineering degrees. They are psychological, organizational, interpersonal and their training requires that they be ‘learned’ in two associated ways.The first part is an appreciation of the principles and techniques involved. That is usually part of a class or study covering the basics (theory) of the method. That part we intend to offer in the form of ‘on-line’ classes and reference study material.The second part requires putting the ‘theory’ into active practice. We often liken this to learning a sport, such as playing a game of tennis. No amount of ‘book study’ can teach you how it feels to swing a racket, or how to know when your swing connects perfectly, and the ball goes exactly where you intended. The exponential growth in the availability of digital data has powered the emergence of data-driven applications like large language models, computer vision, and digital twin. These applications have incredibly high computing demands that exceed the capabilities of today's high-performance computing systems. Unfortunately, the limitations of scaling silicon technology, and the von-Neumann bottleneck suggest that these demands cannot be addressed through traditional means. To address the pressing challenge of computational scalability and efficiency, new computing paradigms are being explored. One promising solution to this computational challenge is to perform in-memory computation using emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) devices. This approach enables energy efficient execution of computationally expensive operations and promises substantial improvements in throughput. However, the NVM technology is still in its infancy stage. To fully unleash the promises of in-memory computation systems, we need novel electronic design automation (EDA) based solutions tailored to data-intensive applications. In this talk, I will discuss the role EDA can play to close the application-to-devices gap in the in-memory computational stack. In the first part of the talk, I will discuss different in-memory computing styles in analog and digital domains. In the second part of the talk, I will present my representative projects that are focused on improving the scalability, energy efficiency, and robustness of different in-memory computing paradigms. In this talk, Illinois Tech Game Design and Experiential Media (GEM) faculty member Carly Kocurek talks about the professionalization of game design, the development of game design degree programs, and the diverse and sometimes surprising career paths that game designers pursue. Degree programs like Illinois Tech's GEM and Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Interactive Media and Game Design (IMGD) train students may place games at the forefront, but the robust skills in experience design, project management, and other areas can lead students to interesting places. The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, Chicago Chapter, invites you to join our Spring Seminar! TOPIC: INTEGRATING GAIT BIOMECHANICS AND MUSCULOSKELETAL MODELING TO OPTIMIZE HUMAN MOVEMENT Over 250,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur every year in the United States alone, costing over $1.5 billion dollars in rehabilitation and reconstruction care. However, despite extensive rehabilitation, nearly 56% of these individuals fail to return to previous functional levels years after treatment due to lingering neuromuscular impairments. Fortunately, innovative gait rehabilitation and musculoskeletal modeling can work synergistically to accelerate individual’s rehabilitation progression and improve their long-term joint health. Thus, my laboratory aims to integrate unique gait protocols, data analytics and musculoskeletal modeling to improve and optimize post-ACL reconstruction individuals’ joint health. Speaker: Dr. Kristin Morgan is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Tennessee, respectively. She was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Kentucky where she was awarded the Lyman T. Johnson Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Morgan has also been the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and a National Institutes of Health K01 Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award. She was one of about 100 outstanding early career engineers invited to the 2021 National Academy of Engineering US Frontiers of Engineering symposium. Her research interests are focused on the development of innovative metrics to quantify healthy and altered neuromuscular function to identify the restoration of healthy motor control as well as the identification of novel rehabilitation protocols to optimize long-term lower extremity injury outcomes. Her work has been supported by the Office of Naval Research, National Science Foundation, General Dynamics Electric Boat, and the National Institutes of Health. In 2024 we will offer ‘Officer Training’ to our ‘newly’ elected AND veteran officers and volunteers; as well as any IEEE member, at any grade level or position. Our wish is to help all gain a fuller awareness of the communication and management skills used within the IEEE, how they function and how to employ them both as IEEE officers, and in your everyday work and life. These are referred to as ‘soft skills’ in that they are not based on the physical principles we all learned as we worked toward our engineering degrees. They are psychological, organizational, interpersonal and their training requires that they be ‘learned’ in two associated ways.The first part is an appreciation of the principles and techniques involved. That is usually part of a class or study covering the basics (theory) of the method. That part we intend to offer in the form of ‘on-line’ classes and reference study material.The second part requires putting the ‘theory’ into active practice. We often liken this to learning a sport, such as playing a game of tennis. No amount of ‘book study’ can teach you how it feels to swing a racket, or how to know when your swing connects perfectly, and the ball goes exactly where you intended. Those elements of a skill only come with practice!Classes:As an introduction to the ‘theory’ portion of these skills, we will offer a set of virtual classes supported by study materials available through the (https://r4.ieee.org/sem/) and the (https://ieee.learningpool.com/) The virtual classes will begin in the 2nd week of January 2024 and conclude end of February of that year. Each class will be conducted via WebEx/Zoom as an overview’ of the topic ‘de jour’ and a discussion or Q&A session to answer questions and clarify issues.
