Raspberry Pi Pico Hardware and Software Overview

November 16, 2023 @ 18:00 - 19:00

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has produced a new microcontroller that is becoming a popoular addition to the embedded controller market. At a single unit price of $4 for the basic unit and $6 for a unit with WiFi and Bluetooth, the Raspberry Pi Pico is a cost-effective solution for the entrepreneur. In addition, the Pico is fabricated as a castelated PC board that can be surface mounted to custom printed circuit hardware for a fast product start.
Raspberry Pi Pico has been designed to be a low cost yet flexible development platform for RP2040, with the following key features:
• RP2040 dual-core ARM Cortex M0+ microcontroller with 2MB Flash and 263kB RAM
• Micro-USB B port for power and data (and for reprogramming the Flash)• 40 pin 21×51 'DIP' style 1mm thick PCB with 0.1" through-hole pins (also with edge castellations)◦ Can be surface mounted as a module◦ 23 GPIO are digital-only and 3 are ADC capable
• 8 Indepemndent powerfull I/O Co-Processors
• 3-pin ARM Serial Wire Debug (SWD) port
• Simple yet highly flexible power supply architecture
◦ Various options for easily powering the unit from micro-USB, external supplies or batteries
• Comprehensive SDK, software examples and documentation
The talk will cover the basics of the Raspberry Pi Pico architecture and some of the novel features of the product. The talk will include demonstrations of using the software development tools for Python and C/C++. It will include the following:

Pico Basics

Pico PIO Processors

Powering the Pico

Programming Options

Python with Thonny IDE

Pico C/C++ Software Development Kit

Arduino IDE with Pico Board

Other IDE (Microsoft Visual Studio)
