Integrating Sustainability Concepts into Robotics Curriculum @UM-Dearborn

December 1, 2023 @ 10:00 - 11:10

This seminar focuses on integrating sustainability concepts within the Robotics Engineering curriculum at the University of Michigan-Dearborn enabled through the support of ASEE EOP-MGP. The talk will introduce a Project-Based Learning (PBL) experience, integrating essential components of energy-efficiency, eco-friendliness, and socio-economic sustainability into the design and operation of last-mile delivery mobile robotic systems and the end-of-life management of these autonomous systems. This comprehensive approach encourages students to consider sustainability issues in their engineering projects holistically. Also, the seminar presents a self-assessment tool for participating students to understand and quantify their propensity to promote these sustainability frameworks in the field of robotics and automation, particularly in Southeast Michigan, where a significant number of UM-Dearborn graduates embark on their careers. The goal is to enhance the capability of future engineers to create sustainable robotic solutions, contributing to long-term economic growth and environmental preservation. Finally, we present our plans for implementation of the EOP Institutionalization Program at UM-Dearborn sponsored by the Lemelson Foundation.
