Agenda:
Program Outline: Thursday May 25, 2023
6:00 Vendor Table Setup (till 8:30)
8:00 REGISTRATION & EXHIBITS
8:30 CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST
9:00
Session 1 – Placing Board Level Decoupling Capacitors
Decoupling capacitors can be an easy and elegant way to reduce EMC on a board. Determining where decoupling capacitors should be placed on a board, and the fundamental principles that determine their placement, will be answered by Dr. Eric Bogatin along with delightful demonstrations during the first EMCFest presentation
10:00 Break & Exhibits
11:00
Session 2 – Simple Calculations Anyone Can Do to Help Ensure EMC Design Compliance
Does your analog ground really need to be isolated from your digital ground? What’s the maximum data rate your wire harness can carry without exceeding radiated emissions requirements? Does your heatsink need to be grounded? These are some of the many questions that must be answered during a product’s initial design stage (before hardware is built and tested). Often these decisions are made by applying design guidelines. The problem is, there are no general guidelines that adequately address these situations. In many cases, a simple calculation will provide a definitive answer with no hardware or testing required.
12:00 LUNCH
1:00
Session 3 – Stopping PCB Boards From Screaming
PCB Boards need to be deliberately designed to avoid being very noisy. Dr. Eric Bogatin is a career guide on silencing screaming PCB boards. Join us at the EMCFest, as right after lunch Dr. Eric Bogatin gives this presentation. It’s a great demonstration of three important PCB layout techniques to keep your boards from screaming.
2:00 Break & Exhibits
3:00
Session 4 – Horrible EMC Design Advice You Can Find on the Internet (and in Print)
EMC consultants review lots of printed circuit board layouts and electronic system designs. Some of them are pretty good and others have significant issues. Occasionally, designs that are incapable of meeting any of their EMC requirements pop up. Almost invariably, these designs are heavily influenced by “helpful” EMC advice the designer found online. Sometimes, this advice was taken from 40-year-old publications and copied into new documents. Sometimes, it’s new advice based on bad physics. This presentation reviews some of the bad advice circulating online and in print today. It also provides a few clues that can help you recognize bad advice when you see it.
4:00 Reception
5:00 Close of EMC Fest
NOTE: breaks will be scheduled at the speaker’s discretion. Table-top displays (exhibits) will be open during registration, lunch, all breaks, and the reception. Access to the table-top displays is available during the technical sessions, but the displays may not be manned during those times.
