Battery Safety Detection Thermal ManagementÂ
August 6, 2021 @ 16:00 - 18:00
As many auto makers announce new electric vehicles battery safety is one of the main concerns of the EV industry. Although incidents of EV fires are much less common than conventional vehicles powered by gasoline fuels, Li-ion batteries contain twice as much energy stored in combustible materials per mile of range that could be released as heat during a failure. In this presentation we will discuss what causes Lithium-ion battery failures (including over-temperature and internal and external short circuits). We will then dive into techniques for modeling the coupled electro-chemical and thermal behavior during normal and abnormal conditions. Finally, we will discuss some the challenges of detecting thermal runaway in large battery packs and opportunities for using gas sensing to help provide diagnostics and an early warning for failing cells.
