Introduction to Machine Functional Safety

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/480382

Functional Safety is a method to allow entry and access to industrial equipment not using OHSA Logout procedures. It is generally seen in "Safety Gates", "Safety Mats" or other items that render machinery non-operational for minor maintenance. This talk will reference standards ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 Agenda: - Introduction to the Machine Safety Lifecycle - Machine Safety as an integral part of business culture. - Importance of picking a safety standard. - Risk assessments are a must do. (And they are easier than you think) - How to design your safety system to meet your required safety level. (SIL or PL) Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/480382

Battery Platform Development for Electric Vehicles

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/477542

[] This talk explores the industry outlook on battery platform development for electric vehicles (EVs). It begins by reviewing key aspects of battery platforms, including cell chemistry, material selection, cell form factor design, and battery pack integration strategies. Industry trends over the next five to seven years are analyzed, focusing on advancements and applications in these areas. Three major battery pack integration approaches—cell-to-module, cell-to-pack, and advanced configurations like cell-to-chassis and cell-to-body designs—are discussed. The potential shift toward cell-to-pack integration as the mainstream approach is examined, highlighting its advantages over traditional cell-to-module designs. Additionally, the benefits of different cell form factors—prismatic, pouch, and cylindrical cells—are reviewed in terms of performance, cost, and safety. By understanding these trade-offs, manufacturers can determine the most suitable battery platform for various EV applications, from standard entry models to high-performance and luxury vehicles. This comprehensive presentation provides insights into the technological and economic factors shaping the future of EV battery development.
