Transmission Planning for Renewable Energy and Load Growth

Rose's Restaurant & Lounge, 201 N Canton Center Rd, Canton, Michigan, United States, 48187

Abstract: Recent federal legislative and regulatory action along changing resource mixes are causing rapid shifts in how our energy system is being utilized. Two pieces of Federal legislation, the CHIPS act and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are driving an increase in domestic manufacturing leading to load growth and increased renewable energy demand. Additionally, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission passed two groundbreaking rules. The first, Order 2023, changes the way that generation is processed by interconnecting utilities. The second, Order 1920, moves transmission planning towards a more proactive and holistic construct. During this talk we will talk about how this all fits to together and what regulatory barriers still exist preventing us from fully building the transmission grid that we need at the lowest possible cost. Speaker: David Mindham DAVID MINDHAM is presently Associate VP, Regulatory & Market Affairs for EDP Renewables. In that role, he oversees a team that develops and implements transmission and market strategy in multiple jurisdictions across North America. He is active in several RTO stakeholder forums, including chair of the MISO Interconnection Process Working Group, a member of the SPP Strategic Planning and Members Committees, and a member of the ERCOT Protocol Revisions Subcommittee. He serves on the Board of Directors of Americans for a Clean Energy Grid, IEEE-USA, Clean Grid Alliance, and Southern Renewable Energy Association. Before his current role, he has held positions in RTO strategy, FERC strategy, and transmission planning at ITC Holdings Corp. Agenda: 1. Socializing and Dinner (6:00 pm-6:30pm) 2. Presentation followed by Q&A PDHs: One Hour (with request) Price: Free (with Dinner) Rose's Restaurant & Lounge, 201 N Canton Center Rd, Canton, Michigan, United States, 48187

The first motorized vehicle to go faster than 60 miles per hour was electric. Ferdinand Porsche’s first car was electric. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison collaborated on electric cars. Now it seems we’ve come full circle as the likes of Volkswagen and Ford and GM and Nissan all try to catch up with Tesla. Room: EC 281, Bldg: Engineering Center, Oakland University, 115 Library Drive, Rochester, Michigan, United States, 48326

IEEE Senior Member is the highest IEEE member grade for which IEEE members can apply and does not incur any additional cost or fees. The Senior Member grade is a way for the IEEE members to receive recognition for their professional experience and significant performance in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and the related fields including Computer Science and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law, and Policy. The advancement to Senior Member provides the IEEE members with significant and distinct benefits. These benefits include the eligibility to hold Executive IEEE Volunteer Positions and getting recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence. Newly elevated senior members will also receive an engraved senior member plaque from IEEE. Senior Member Elevation: IEEE SEM Section Membership Committee will reprise its Senior Member Elevation event, on Saturday from 10:00AM to 12 noon <In person> Elevation: Senior Member Reviewers will assist interested member candidates with at least 10 years of experience in their profession. The way it works is: At least a 10 years of significant experience with BS degree needs be be established to initiate the senior membership elevation. (A Ph.D is considered to be 5 years of significant experience and a master degree is considered to be 2 years of significant experience. The remaining 5 (with PhD) to 8 (with MS degree) years of significant experience should be established from the member experience in his/her profession to initiate and submit applications for Senior Member Elevation.) Note: There is no cost to becoming a Senior Member, and this step is a necessary prelude to seeking the IEEE ‘Fellow’ level. Some IEEE positions are open only to senior members, For a complete description of the Senior Member process and its benefits, see the link at: https://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/grade_elevation.html To (https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/416546)for "Elevation" Time Slot, please(https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/422558)for the event and consider contacting existing senior members/fellows as references; also bring an electronic copy of your resume, and relevant supporting materials (list of papers published, standards work done, patents, awards, senior/leadership positions, etc).
