Southeastern Michigan Section Senior Member Elevation (an In-Person Event!)

Room: EC 281, Bldg: Engineering Center, Oakland University, 115 Library Drive, Rochester, Michigan, United States, 48326

IEEE Senior Member is the highest IEEE member grade for which IEEE members can apply and does not incur any additional cost or fees. The Senior Member grade is a way for the IEEE members to receive recognition for their professional experience and significant performance in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and the related fields including Computer Science and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law, and Policy. The advancement to Senior Member provides the IEEE members with significant and distinct benefits. These benefits include the eligibility to hold Executive IEEE Volunteer Positions and getting recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence. Newly elevated senior members will also receive an engraved senior member plaque from IEEE. Senior Member Elevation: IEEE SEM Section Membership Committee will reprise its Senior Member Elevation event, on Saturday June 1, 2024 from 10:00AM to 12 noon <In person> Elevation: Senior Member Reviewers will assist interested member candidates with at least 10 years of experience in their profession. The way it works is: At least a 10 years of significant experience with BS degree needs be be established to initiate the senior membership elevation. (A Ph.D is considered to be 5 years of significant experience and a master degree is considered to be 2 years of significant experience. The remaining 5 (with PhD) to 8 (with MS degree) years of significant experience should be established from the member experience in his/her profession to initiate and submit applications for Senior Member Elevation.) Note: There is no cost to becoming a Senior Member, and this step is a necessary prelude to seeking the IEEE ‘Fellow’ level. Some IEEE positions are open only to senior members, For a complete description of the Senior Member process and its benefits, see the link at: https://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/grade_elevation.html To (https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/416546)for "Elevation" Time Slot, please(https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/416546)for the event and consider contacting existing senior members/fellows as references; also bring an electronic copy of your resume, and relevant supporting materials (list of papers published, standards work done, patents, awards, senior/leadership positions, etc). Here is a link to (https://www.ieee.org/membership/senior/deadlines.html) before filing your application. Also you may seek to contact or network with other Southeastern Michigan Section members who were upgraded to senior status. Networking: * We recommend that attendees join us in person, we will create 1-on-1 sessions, one for each reference (at least) * NOTE: Preference given to members of Southeastern Michigan first! Time permitting we can follow up with members from outside the Section * The whole idea of the Saturday meeting: - - Is to learn and connect with references. when references meet you and interact - Once they know you, they can do a better job of writing a reference - Get tips on what to upload to the online application - Learn what areas to include/highlight for the supplemental materials - Learn not to simply copy paste the CV to the different areas of the online application. Co-sponsored by: Sharan Kalwani Speaker(s): , Sharan Kalwani Agenda: AGENDA (Saturday) 10:00 AM - Coffee/Tea, Introductions, and Elevation processing. 12 noon - Wrap up, Clean up, Solidify new friendships, contacts, networking, pizza and temporarily say 'Good bye' Room: EC 281, Bldg: Engineering Center, Oakland University, 115 Library Drive, Rochester, Michigan, United States, 48326

NextG Wireless R&D Challenges & Opportunities: The Remarkable Quest to Harness the EM Spectrum

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/420900

[] In this talk, I will present a high-level snapshot of current R&D challenges in the “wireless communications” landscape, informed by a recent NSF-NIST report (2023) on R&D gaps as well as recent and ongoing developments in the wireless ecosystem (industry, academia, national labs). The R&D snapshots reflect the challenges and opportunities in our continuing quest to harness the electromagnetic spectrum in space, time and frequency, including: - High frequency operation and large bandwidths - Massive MIMO arrays and multi-beamforming - New time-frequency waveforms for high mobility - Predictive and computationally tractable modeling of wireless propagation environments These seemingly distinct R&D topics are connected through a unique personal perspective spanning mathematics, physics, information, computation and technology that I will share in this presentation with the hope of spurring further discussion and collaboration.
