  • Senior Member Elevation (changed to VIRTUAL Event!)

    Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/562816

[]IEEE Senior Member is the highest IEEE member grade for which IEEE members can apply and does not incur any additional cost or fees. The Senior Member grade is a way for the IEEE members to receive recognition for their professional experience and significant performance in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and the related fields including Computer Science and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law, and Policy. The advancement to Senior Member provides the IEEE members with significant and distinct benefits. These benefits include the eligibility to hold Executive IEEE Volunteer Positions and getting recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence. Newly elevated senior members will also receive an engraved senior member plaque from IEEE. We will also feature their profile in the next edition of Wavelengths. Senior Member Elevation: IEEE SEM Section Membership Committee will reprise its Senior Member Elevation event, on July 11th, 2026 between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM (In Person). Afterwards - we will go have either high tea or a classic Florida styel "early bird" dinner. The way it works is : At least a 10 years of significant experience with BS degree needs be be established to initiate the senior membership elevation. (A Ph.D is considered to be 5 years of significant experience and a master degree is considered to be 2 years of significant experience. The remaining 5 (with PhD) to 8 (with MS degree) years of significant experience should be established from the member experience in his/her profession to initiate and submit applications for Senior Member Elevation.) Note: There is no cost to becoming a Senior Member, and this step is a necessary prelude to seeking the IEEE ‘Fellow’ level. For a complete description of the Senior Member process and its benefits, see the link at: https://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/grade_elevation.html To (https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/461460)for "Elevation" Time Slot, please(https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/461460)for the event and consider contacting existing senior members/fellows as references; also bring an electronic copy of your resume, and relevant supporting materials (list of papers published, standards work done, patents, senior/leadership positions, etc.). • SciFi Documentary Part 1: Rendezvous with the Future (FIRST CONTACT)

    Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/565837

[]Inspired by the recent Netflix series: "3 Body Problem", we present a series of 3 documentary sessions featuring the Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin. The series is titled "Rendezvous with the Future" in which he shares thoughts on 3 topics: - First Contact : "Contact with an alien civilization has many possibilities. It might have a good outcome. Equally it might have terrible consequences. Any child knows not to open the door to strangers. They know not to greet strangers casually. This is a matter of common sense." — Liu Cixin - Voyage to the Stars: "I think if humans want to survive, our only choice is to expand our living space in the universe. Like H.G. Wells once said: Human beings will either fill the universe or perish completely. There is no other choice." — Liu Cixin - Becoming a SuperCivilization: "The characteristics of a supercivilization are that it uses technology to enhance its evolution to become a more powerful species. Second, the energy that a supercivilization can use must be really huge. Third, it must have gone a long way on this path of understanding the laws of the universe. But a technologically advanced supercivilization cannot be a civilization with only ideas. It must have left its own mark on the universe. It must have spread to places of considerable distance." - Liu Cixin Each episode is approximately 50 minutes long and will be followed by a 30~40 minutes group discussion period. NOTE: You will need to register for each event separately, and will (https://www.webex.com/downloads.html)on your phone/tablet or laptop/desktop computer. • Nikola Tesla: Documentary

    Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/565834

[]Recently as part of an innovative and fresh approach, i.e. a non-traditional meeting event: we presented video documentaries. This was very warmly received. So we decided to continue the good work. We proudly present the Documentary: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: "TESLA: Visionary or Madman?" Summary: Meet Nikola Tesla, the genius engineer and tireless inventor whose technology revolutionized the electrical age of the 20th century. Regarded by many historians as an eccentric genius, Tesla gained international fame for his invention of a system of alternating current that made possible the distribution of electricity over vast distances and is the basis for the electrical grid that powers 21st century life. But the visionary Tesla imagined much more — robots, radio, radar, remote control, the wireless transmission of messages and pictures, and harnessing the wind and sun to provide free energy to all. A showman, he dazzled his scientific peers who flocked to see him demonstrate his inventions and send thousands of volts of electricity pulsing through his body. His fertile but undisciplined imagination was the source of his genius but also his downfall, as the image of Tesla as a “mad scientist” came to overshadow his reputation as a brilliant innovator. Even before his death in 1943, he was largely forgotten, his name obscured by Thomas Edison — his hero, one-time employer, and rival. But it is his exhilarating sense of the future that has inspired renewed interest in the man, as his once scoffed-at vision of a world connected by wireless technology has become a reality. WEBEX client will be needed. Link will be sent 1 hour before AFTER the movie - we can have a brief discussion session. NOTE: You must supply your own soda pop and popcorn! :-) Trivia may also follow, so bring your Jeopardy hats too Agenda: 7:00 PM - Welcome and Introductions, Business update; 7:05 PM - Documentary Start; 8:00 PM - End of Documentary; Start of Q & A; Group Discussion 8:15 PM - Wrap Up (ALL times are shown in EST/EDT!)
