As we enter the mid-2020s, an attempted second nuclear renaissance has had decidedly mixed results. From an original 31 new nuclear reactor builds that were proposed in the late 2000s, only two were constructed and completed. Instead, much of the existing US nuclear power fleet, built in the 1970s and 1980s, has been renovated and continues to operate today. Is a second nuclear renaissance truly dead in the USA? Or have concerns about global warming, the US electric grid’s stability and a deteriorating global political environment given a new lease on life to advanced reactors? Speaker(s): John Hawkinson, Agenda: 5:30 PM – Networking 6:15 PM – Dinner (pizza, salad, and soft drinks provided) 7:00 PM – Presentation Bldg: Tavern Pizza & Pasta Grill, 1755 50th St, West Des Moines, Iowa, United States, 50266

IEEE of Southern MN will be kicking off our winter programming with a technical talk on an overview of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methodology and its applications. As in the past, food and beverages will be provided for in-person attendees in Mann Hall of the Medical Sciences Building. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methodology continues to grow in popularity thanks to the rapid increase in affordable computing power and easy to use software. This surge in accessibility has enabled companies of all sizes to adopt FEA into their design process. A well implemented process allows for better product designs, at lower cost, and with a faster development time. IBM has been leveraging FEA for over 20 years as part of its design best practices and has seen significant technological benefits and cost savings as a result. This talk will cover the fundamental theory of FEA, key concepts that are utilized in its application, and how to ensure model accuracy. Additionally, some tips and tricks will be shared for getting started with your own FEA simulations. Throughout the presentation, examples of how these principles are applied to IBM products will be shared to illustrate key concepts. Speaker(s): Mr. Kevin O'Connell, Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00 Social half hour to grab food and drink 7:00 - 8:00 Technical talk Room: Mann Hall, Bldg: Medical Sciences Building, 300 3rd Ave SW, Rochester, Minnesota, United States, 55902, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/405776

Engineers Week Webinar Design, Discover, Develop: Everybody Engineers at (https://theworks.org/) (https://theworks.org/), an engineering museum located in Bloomington, MN, connected to approximately 60,000 young (K-6) engineers last year. While many of those young engineers came to the physical space of the museum most were reached through programming of the Works that brings engineering to the community. Program offerings include Family Engineering Nights at schools or community centers, special events like Tech Fest and She Engineers, and workshops for K-6 students and teachers. While each of these programs rely on museum staff, they also need volunteers excited about the joy of engineering with young people. Come to this presentation to learn about what the Works has to offer and discover to opportunities to strengthen our profession. Event picture is from the (https://theworks.org/about-us/newsroom/media-resources/) provided by the Museum.
