Over the years Gary Olson has looked at literally thousands of drawings and specifications for on-site generator sets, and, in general, the generator set is treated like a normal service from a protection point of view.  While from a code perspective that is not inherently wrong, it doesn’t recognize the inherent nature of a generator set compared to a normal service.  The result is that the generator set installation is not optimized for reliability or cost.

For the best protection of the generator set, we need to use a different set of “rules” that recognizes the inherent strengths and weaknesses of a generator set.

The material presented will describe the best protection strategies for generator set applications.  It will cover common installations of line and medium voltage generator sets in standby applications, as well as notes on parallel generator sets.

Presentation is October 28th starting at 5:00 pm
