Electrical Technology in Modern Electric Vehicles

Parker's Smokehouse, 16880 Highway 6, Ashland, Nebraska, United States, 68003

Brought to you by IEEE Nebraska Section's IAS and PES Technical Chapters. The evening will begin with a thirty minute networking session at 5:30pm followed by dinner and the Update on Electric Transportation Update presentation at approximately 6:30pm. We have previously learned: The current electric vehicle “renaissance” began over a century ago with one in every three automobiles sold in America being battery powered. The first motorized vehicle to go faster than 60 miles per hour was electric. Ferdinand Porsche’s first car was electric. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison collaborated on electric cars. Now it seems we’ve come full circle as the likes of Volkswagen, Ford, GM, and Nissan all try to catch up with Tesla. The performance of modern Electric Vehicles is significantly better than that of earlier EVs. The higher energy storge and power output of Li Ion batteries is perhaps the most important contributor, but several other improved electrical components have also contributed significantly. These include three phase AC motors, high efficiency power electronics in DC to AC inverters, and microcomputers in motor controllers. Performance improving technologies and their introduction in EVs are discussed in this presentation. Experience with modern electric cars will be available for attendees. NOTE: PDH's AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST Co-sponsored by: Rebecca Furtado - IEEE Nebraska Section Chair Speaker(s): Dr. Don Cox, Agenda: 5:30pm - Sign in and networking 6:00pm - Dinner starts and EV Presentation follows 7:30pm - Q & A Parker's Smokehouse, 16880 Highway 6, Ashland, Nebraska, United States, 68003

Southeastern Michigan Section Senior Member Elevation (an In-Person Event!)

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/422558

IEEE Senior Member is the highest IEEE member grade for which IEEE members can apply and does not incur any additional cost or fees. The Senior Member grade is a way for the IEEE members to receive recognition for their professional experience and significant performance in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and the related fields including Computer Science and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law, and Policy. The advancement to Senior Member provides the IEEE members with significant and distinct benefits. These benefits include the eligibility to hold Executive IEEE Volunteer Positions and getting recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence. Newly elevated senior members will also receive an engraved senior member plaque from IEEE. Senior Member Elevation: IEEE SEM Section Membership Committee will reprise its Senior Member Elevation event, on Saturday from 10:00AM to 12 noon <In person> Elevation: Senior Member Reviewers will assist interested member candidates with at least 10 years of experience in their profession. The way it works is: At least a 10 years of significant experience with BS degree needs be be established to initiate the senior membership elevation. (A Ph.D is considered to be 5 years of significant experience and a master degree is considered to be 2 years of significant experience. The remaining 5 (with PhD) to 8 (with MS degree) years of significant experience should be established from the member experience in his/her profession to initiate and submit applications for Senior Member Elevation.) Note: There is no cost to becoming a Senior Member, and this step is a necessary prelude to seeking the IEEE ‘Fellow’ level. Some IEEE positions are open only to senior members, For a complete description of the Senior Member process and its benefits, see the link at: https://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/grade_elevation.html To (https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/416546)for "Elevation" Time Slot, please(https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/422558)for the event and consider contacting existing senior members/fellows as references; also bring an electronic copy of your resume, and relevant supporting materials (list of papers published, standards work done, patents, awards, senior/leadership positions, etc). Here is a link to (https://www.ieee.org/membership/senior/deadlines.html) before filing your application. Also you may seek to contact or network with other Southeastern Michigan Section members who were upgraded to senior status. Networking: * We recommend that attendees join us in person, we will create 1-on-1 sessions, one for each reference (at least) * NOTE: Preference given to members of Southeastern Michigan first! Time permitting we can follow up with members from outside the Section * The whole idea of the Saturday meeting: - - Is to learn and connect with references. when references meet you and interact - Once they know you, they can do a better job of writing a reference - Get tips on what to upload to the online application - Learn what areas to include/highlight for the supplemental materials - Learn not to simply copy paste the CV to the different areas of the online application. Co-sponsored by: Sharan Kalwani Speaker(s): , Sharan Kalwani Agenda: AGENDA (Saturday) 10:00 AM - Introductions, and Elevation processing. 11:30 AM - Wrap up, Clean up, Solidify new friendships, contacts, networking, pizza and temporarily say 'Good bye' Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/422558

IEEE RRVS: September 2024 Meeting

Bldg: tbd, tbd, Rockford, Illinois, United States

Using Open Source to Accelerate Sustainability Initiatives Addressing climate change and sustainability is one of the most urgent concerns we face. A key step in addressing these concerns is for organizations to measure, analyze and document their carbon emissions and climate risks. Sustainability and climate reporting is effectively being mandated by both governments and industry. This reporting, however, often requires significant investments in time and resources to design, develop and implement. The right data must be found, prepared and organized to support for instance, calculation of the Greenhouse Gas emissions. This can be a significant challenge. Open source projects, such as Egeria, can play a significant role in accelerating these initiatives. In this talk you will learn about: - What are some of the key standards and programs for measuring and reporting on Sustainability - Acceleration through Open Source projects - An overview of Egeria and it can jumpstart sustainability projects - A deeper look at the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and Carbon Accounting showing how Egeria can help organizations establish and deliver trusted sustainability reports About Speaker: Dan is a founder of(https://pdr-associates.com/). – a consultancy specializing in accelerating digital transformations through innovative data architectures and governance. Dan is a contributor to the Linux AI & Data Foundation’s Egeria Project. Egeria supports an open metadata eco-system enabling the exchange and use of metadata across a broad variety of use cases from self-service analytics to data governance in a heterogeneous, federated and distributed environment. Dan retired from IBM as a Distinguished Engineer and Director/CTO in the Weather Business Solutions group of IBM AI Applications in Q4 2021 where he led the application of geospatial data and analytics to multiple areas such as environmental intelligence, agriculture and utilities. He was responsible for technical leadership, product development and operations in this rapidly growing area with particular interest in the delivery of insight into analytical and operational solutions and the curation and management of multi-petabyte systems. As an experienced technical executive and thought leader, Dan focuses on creating and implementing pragmatic systems that create new value from information. A proven CTO and Development Director, Dan has combined technology development, team development and operations to build and deliver numerous ground-breaking products and technologies. Dan’s last project before retiring from IBM was to lead the collaboration between IBM Research and Development teams to shape, implement and operate the IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite to provide customers insights on how Weather, Climate and Geospatial analytics can enhance their sustainability, operations and planning. Previously, Dan was the CTO for the IBM InfoSphere Brand covering data integration, governance, master, reference and meta data. Dan has over 40 years of experience in research and commercial distributed computing ranging over transaction and object-oriented systems, software fault tolerance, messaging, information integration, business integration, metadata management and database systems. Dan has served as a trusted advisor to customers on data architecture, information and governance strategies across Financial Services, Manufacturing, Agriculture, and retail. A co-author of numerous papers, patents, and books, Dan is also credited with over 60 patents.
