Description about the speaker: Thomas A. (Tom) Badgwell, PhD, PE, is a Professor of Practice in the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He earned a BS degree from Rice University and MS and PhD degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, all in Chemical Engineering, and he is registered as a Professional Engineer in Texas. Tom’s career has focused on modeling, optimization, and control of chemical processes, with past positions at Setpoint, Fisher/Rosemount, Rice University, Aspen Technology, ExxonMobil, and Collaborative Systems Integration. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and a past Director of the Computing and Systems Technology (CAST) Division, from which he received the Computing Practice Award in 2013. He is also a member of the IEEE Control System Society. Tom was inducted into the Control Global Process Automation Hall of Fame in 2022. He has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Process Control, as an Industrial Trustee of the Computer Aids in Chemical Engineering (CACHE) Corporation, as a Member of the IFAC Industry Committee, and is presently the Vice Chair, Industry on the IFAC Technical Committee (6.1) on Chemical Process Control. Cubic boron arsenide (c-BAs) is an indirect bandgap (1.82 eV) semiconductor, it has a similar band structure as silicon, but its thermal conductivity is 10 times higher and its carrier mobility is three times larger at room temperature. This suitable bandgap, simultaneous high thermal conductivity and high carrier mobility have made c-BAs a promising material for next generation electronics, especially after recent experimental verifications of these excellent thermal and electronic properties. However, many challenges still remain in order for c-BAs to realize its many promises. Besides the challenge of synthesis of uniform large size c-BAs crystals, techniques that can rapidly characterize and screen high quality c-BAs are still lacking. In this talk, I will first give a brief introduction to the history and basic properties of c-BAs, I will then explain its next-only-to-diamond high thermal conductivity. After that, I will show optical techniques that have been developed to measure thermal conductivity and carrier mobility. Finally I will show photoluminescence and Raman spectra of c-BAs, and discuss the challenges of using them to identify and characterize high quality c-BAs. Guest Lecture Focus It is an uncomfortable truth for designers and operators of technology that it is increasingly being used by perpetrators of interpersonal coercive-control, for example in cases such as domestic abuse. Moreover, this use of technology does not typically involve hacking in the traditional sense, rather the misuse of often well-intentioned standard features - the design of which usually did not include threat analysis of, for instance, an abusive domestic partner who has access to passwords or manages the device/application in question. Examples include tracking of partners and their children, manipulation of social media while gaslighting to cover what is happening, and utilising smart-home devices to secretly monitor movement. In this session we will update you on our progress towards a recommended practice in the Principles of Design and Operation of such technology to minimise this kind of misuse. Multi-RIS-empowered smart wireless networks: Capacity characterization and environment learning potential [] Abstract The upcoming 6G pushes the 5G performance indicators to unprecedented levels, envisioning up to THz frequencies, devices with embedded sensing capabilities, and native artificial intelligence. These challenging features are expected to become a reality around 2030 and with a strong green footprint. In this talk, we will elaborate around the emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces and its efficient configuration optimization via state-of-the-art sensing-capable hardware architectures. We will discuss recent results on the capacity characterization of multi-RIS-empowered point-to-point and multiple-access channels, and then present a reinforcement learning approach for the orchestration of multi-RIS-empowered smart wireless environments. We will also discuss the latest considerations of the latter environments for sensing-aided communications and distributed sensing. It was once widely believed that computers would enhance the speed, reliability, and applicability of human deductive reasoning in the physical and social sciences, much as motorized vehicles (e.g., cars, trains, airplanes) have enhanced the speed, reliability, and applicability of human manual abilities in transportation. Yet, 60 years later, computers can be used confidently only for paperwork tasks, analysis of regularly structured data, and simple process control applications. Complex software rarely satisfies user needs, is untrustworthy and difficult to maintain, and largely opaque to its users. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods including heuristics, machine learning, and statistical methods are in opposition to sound deductive reasoning. This presentation explains certain practical and logical impediments to computer enhancement of human deductive reasoning, the deductive limitations of modern programming languages, the role of AI, and provides some promising alternatives. [] Abstract: Cities worldwide are transitioning quickly towards a low-carbon environment, high quality of living, and resource-efficient economy. Artificial Intelligence of Things (IoT) is a combination of Artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enable autonomous decision-making, data analytics, and system optimization. This talk will share our experiences on AIoT for smart cities. The first work is called Green IoT, which provides artificial intelligence and open data for sustainable city development. In this work, we developed an intelligent IoT system for air pollution monitoring in Uppsala, Sweden. The second work, called Smart Water Auditing, uses IoT and machine learning to provide insights into how much water is consumed in different domestic use categories. It aims to reduce water consumption and raise awareness of people's water consumption habits. This talk will present our AIoT system designs, machine learning algorithms, implementation, and experimental results in Hong Kong and Sweden. Bio: Dr. Edith C.H. Ngai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. Before joining HKU in 2020, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University, Sweden. Her research interests include IoT, edge intelligence, smart cities, and smart health. Her co-authored papers received a Best Paper Award in QShine 2023 and Best Paper Runner-Up Awards in ACM/IEEE IPSN 2013 and IEEE IWQoS 2010. She was an Area Editor of IEEE Internet of Things Journal from 2020 to 2022. She is an Associate Editor in IEEE Transactions of Mobile Computing and IEEE Transactions of Industrial Informatics. She has been a TPC co-chair in IEEE SmartCity 2015, IEEE GreenCom 2022, and IEEE/ACM IWQoS 2024.
