Active dendrites form the basis for biologically plausible neural networks possessing desirable features of the biological brain including flexibility, adaptability, and high energy efficiency. A formulation for active dendrites using the notational language of conventional machine learning is put forward as an alternative to a spiking neuron formulation. Based on this formulation an online clustering unit (OCU) is developed as a basic neural building block, and its capabilities are demonstrated via an application from experimental neuroscience: spike sorting. Spike sorting takes inputs from electrical probes embedded in neural tissue, detects voltage spikes (action potentials) emitted by neurons, and attempts to sort the spikes according to the neuron that emitted them. Many spike sorting methods form clusters based on the shapes of action potential waveforms, under the assumption that all spikes emitted by a given neuron have similar shapes and will map to the same cluster. Clustering is challenging because there are natural variations both between different neurons and spike instances emitted by the same neuron leading to significant overlaps in the spike shapes. Using synthetic spike shapes, the accuracy of the proposed OCU is compared with a much more compute- intensive, offline k-means approach. The OCU outperforms k-means and has the advantage of requiring only a single pass through the input stream, learning as it goes. The overall capabilities of the OCU are demonstrated for a number of scenarios including dynamic changes in the input stream, differing neuron spike rates, and varying cluster counts. Abstract With the advances in information processing technology, the importance of high-density data storage is increasing. For example, it is predicted that the total global amount of digital data will reach 163 ZB in this year. On the other hand, studies on thermal fluctuations predict that magnetic storage, which plays a major role in this field, will reach a theoretical limit in the near future, and thus a novel high-density storage method is required. Ferroelectrics can hold bit information in the form of the polarization direction of individual domains. Moreover, the domain wall of typical ferroelectric materials with no exchange interaction between electric dipoles is as thin as a few lattice parameters, which is favorable for high-density data storage. With this background, we previously proposed ferroelectric data storage that uses scanning nonlinear dielectric microscopy (SNDM), called SNDM probe memory, as a next-generation ultrahigh-density information recording method. We confirmed extremely high recording density and high-speed writing using LiTaO3 single crystal media, i.e. 2.8-nm f single nano-domain inversion dot formation, real information storage at a density of 4 Tbit/inch2, and 500-psec high speed domain switching. In this seminar, I will outline recent research and development toward the practical application of this SNDM probe memory. The contents of the talk are as follows. - Overview of SNDM probe memory operating principles and high-density recording results. - Proposal of Heat assisted ferroelectric reading (HAFeR) for high speed ferroelectric probe data storage. - Demonstration of actual nanosecond dielectric response using HAFeR technology - 8-inch f 30nm thick PZT single-crystal like recording media trial fabrication by sputtering method for the realistic recording media. - Speaker(s): Yasuo Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/482406

The human brain has 80 billion neurons, or specialized electrically-active brain cells, and an equal number of other cells organized into circuits and systems that process information and give rise to cognition. Brain architectures, especially those of the cerebral cortex, are created during development but are also continuously shaped by plasticity and learning. Flexible reconfigurable networks are essential for dynamics of brain activity underlying cognition. Understanding the underlying computational principles is fundamental for understanding how the brain creates the mind, for mechanism-based treatment of brain disorders, and for next-generation AI aimed at efficient low-power computing that resembles human cognition. The number of power electronics converters connected to electrical networks has been growing exponentially as they are part of all new generation connected to the grid. While the rapid control and fast electronic switching available with this technology offer flexibility in network operation, the dynamic interactions between several of them threaten the operational stability of the transmission grid is a concern. It is required to develop a methodology for identifying the risks associated with the stability and control interaction before a new power electronic device (e.g. Windfarm, interconnector, STATCOM) is introduced to the network The talk will focus on an analytical framework in impedance domain to quantify the interaction between the new plant and the rest of the network for setting additional grid connection study specifications which will include detail technical study to check and mitigate the risks associated with new power electronics interfaced generation. The framework developed is to support MMC technology, control delay, system strength and FRT capability of dynamic voltage support devices and windfarm through technical case study conducted at the research group of Bikash Pal at Imperial College London. Future research challenges and opportunities will be highlighted. Late in the 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially some problems she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. The result was the book Silent Spring (1962), which brought environmental concerns to an unprecedented attention of the American people. Although Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, it spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, which led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides. It also inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Carson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. This documentary is all about how that book came about and her life story Agenda: 1800 Hours - START of Documentary 1930 Hours - END of Documentary 1931 Hours - Start of Group Discussions, Thoughts, etc ALL times are in EDT/EST format Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/479796 |

You want to move into a leadership role — but the path from expert to leader isn’t what it used to be. In this session, we’ll explore what it really means to evolve beyond subject-matter expertise and step into transformative leadership during an era defined by AI acceleration and what futurist Jamais Cascio coined as the BANI era: Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible. What You’ll Take Away: - A deeper understanding of why today’s volatility demands more than just competence — it demands clarity, adaptability, and relational intelligence - A mindset shift from reactive problem-solver to systems-aware leader - New language and frameworks for building trust, influence, and decision-making power in uncertain environments - Tools to define your unique value as a future-ready leader — not just a domain expert Bonus Takeaway: Learn how AI isn’t replacing leaders — it’s revealing the gaps in human leadership. You’ll leave with a mental model to augment your intuition and strategic decision-making in real time. Speaker(s): Caroline Stokes Agenda: IEEE-USA's free webinars/events are designed to help you find your next job, maintain your career, negotiate an appropriate salary, understand ethical considerations in the workplace and learn about other career-building strategies and public policy developments that affect your profession.
