Long searched but only now discovered two-dimensional (2D) magnets are one of the selected group of materials that retain or impart strongly spin correlated properties at the limit of atomic layer thickness. In this presentation, I will discuss how different layered compounds (e.g., CrX3 (X=F, Cl, Br, I), MnPS3, Fe5-xGeTe2, Cr2Ge2Te6) can provide new playgrounds for applications and fundamental exploration of spin correlations involving quantum-effects, topological spin-excitations and ultrafast laser pulses. In particular, I will show how van der Waals magnets do not require any magnetic anisotropy to stabilize 2D magnetism and demonstrate the null valid of the Mermin-Wagner theorem in practical applications. Moreover, some recent results of ultrafast laser excitations on different vdW heterostructures will be shown towards all-optical control of their magnetic properties with efficient heat management. With spring comes the onset of the severe weather conditions the Midwest is noted for. Knowing how to access the approaching weather is the first step intaking appropriate precautions to keep safe. Radar can only supply part of ht33e information needed to assess a weather situation. The National Weather Service relies on first-person reports from people in the field with eyes on the weather phenomenon. Eyewitness accounts in addition to radar returns allows the most accurate depiction of the weather. Even if you do not plan to actively pursue weather spotting knowing what is approaching and what actions to take can help save your life and the3e lives of those around you. The Severe Weather Spotting course will prepare you to determine the severity of the approaching weather and give you the tools to take the best course of action. Included is material on the types of weather most frequently encountered this time of the year, how to read the sky and assess the type of weather approaching, and the correct course of action to ensure safety. In this presentation, we will explore Electric Power Delivery from the perspective of the applied practice of Power Engineering. We’ll start with a review of power system fundamentals. Next, we will define the various types of substations and describe their purposes. We’ll continuing by exploring transmission lines, which are the connections between substations to form “the grid.” Finally, we will review the various arrangements of substations that are typical in the power delivery space, exploring the pros and cons of each. Bio: Mitch Bradt is and engineer and educator who loves to see students “get it.” He has approximately 25 years of experience in the electrical power industry, with an additional 5 years in aerospace. His responsibilities have varied from aircraft electrical systems, to utility system protective relaying, to utility-applied power electronics, to wind and solar plant collectors, and teaching in these areas. Our next MIPSE seminar will be presented by Dr. Marcel Georgin of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). The seminar, to be held Wednesday, April 9, at 3:10 pm in Room 1003 EECS, is titled “RF Plasma Cathodes and Other Research Activities in the Plasma Propulsion Group at NRL”. NRL is a major center for development of plasma propulsion systems with a focus on long lived systems for space missions and the plasma physics that might limit or enhance that longevity. From our measurements and model, we project thruster performance and discuss the consequences for space exploration. Then we dive into non-ideal behavior that can be exhibited in these cathodes including sheath expansion and mode transitions. More than 400 deaths and over 78,000 crashes were caused by tire blowout annually, which cause huge life and property losses. Automated driving technologies, including but not limited to various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), have undergone significant development recently. Can one of these technologies also help to address tire blowout control better than human drivers? This talk will first introduce an enhanced tire blowout model that can describe tire and vehicle responses more accurately after tire blowout. Then, shared control and automatic control based on different automated driving levels will be discussed. The developed models and control algorithms will be validated and discussed through both simulation and experimental tests. Please join us for a technical seminar by Dr. Alycen Wiacek on Medical Acoustics for Global Health, Imaging, and Clinical Translation at Wayne State University. Abstract: Ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging are two related medical imaging modalities that transmit sound and light, respectively, into the body and measure signals representing the acoustic response from tissue. Due to their potential to be both noninvasive and portable, these acoustic-based imaging modalities hold significant promise for diagnosis in resource limited settings. However, engineering quantitative tools rather than requiring manual image interpretation is critical to aid the transition of these methods into the clinic. In this talk, I will highlight the work being done in the Medical Acoustics for Global Health, Imaging, and Clinical Translation (MAGIC) Lab at Oakland University, developing quantitative tools to improve the quality and availability of ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. Specifically, I will highlight three main innovations including: (1) leveraging physics-informed deep learning to diagnose breast cancer, (2) quantifying portable ultrasound to guide physical therapy treatment, and (3) developing quantitative photoacoustic-based biomarkers to characterize thrombosis. Bio: Alycen Wiacek is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at Oakland University where she directs the Medical Acoustics for Global health Imaging and Clinical translation (MAGIC) lab. Her research focuses on leveraging signal processing and artificial intelligence to improve the quality and availability of ultrasound and other medical imaging methods. Dr. Wiacek earned her BS from Wayne State University, MS from Oakland University, and PhD from Johns Hopkins University all in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
