As the world is generating zettabytes of Data, IEEE has launched new projects emanating from the IEEE/TA Data Strategy Ad Hoc committee. These new projects leverage IEEE’s Data to create value for customers worldwide. They also offer opportunities for researchers and industries to share data in order to accelerate development cycles. The first is a product called IEEE DataPort, a searchable repository of research Data. The Data can be linked to the author’s IEEE publication and anyone can upload Datasets. The Datasets get screened for the metadata and Quality and are assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). IEEE DataPort has a broad spectrum of users numbering over 8.5 million and is adding 20,000 every day. The second is an Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning based combination Search and Knowledge engine. It uses NLP (Natural Language Processing) and RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) artificial intelligence. “AskIEEE” is a pilot that allows users to ask questions in their own format and gets answers based on IEEE information that has been ingested into the engine. This talk will present capabilities and successes of these first two efforts and discuss opportunities to expand the reach to members and researchers worldwide. Chicago COMSOC Chapter is delighted to be back with the Distinguished Lecture series. Under the leadership of Prof. Besma Smida , IEEE COMSOC North America Director, COMSOC Chicago chapter is pleased to host 3rd IEEE COMSOC Distinguished Lecture Series. Topic: From Federated to Fog Learning: Expanding the Frontier of Model Training over Contemporary Wireless Network Systems Abstract Fog learning is an emerging paradigm for optimizing the orchestration of artificial intelligence services over contemporary network systems. Different from existing distributed techniques such as federated learning, fog learning emphasizes intrinsically in its design the unique node, network, and data properties encountered in today’s fog networks that span computing elements from the edge to the cloud. An important thread of research in fog learning has been on understanding the role that peer-to-peer topologies formed on an ad-hoc basis among local groups of heterogeneous computing elements can play in elevating the achievable tradeoff between intelligence quality and resource efficiency. In this talk, I will discuss recent results on the analysis of fog learning processes which give insights into the impact that these topologies, along with other properties such as model characteristics and fog decision parameters, have on global training performance. Additionally, I will discuss the development of adaptive control methodologies that leverage such relationships for jointly optimizing relevant fog learning metrics. Speaker(s): Chris, Prasenjit Agenda: - Welcome address : Prasenjit Banerjee, IEEE COMSOC Chicago Chapter Chair - Distinguished Lecture - From Federated to Fog Learning: Expanding the Frontier of Model Training over Contemporary Wireless Network Systems - Room: 1000, Bldg: Science and Engineering Office, 851 S Morgan St, Chicago, Illinois, United States, 60607

The West Michigan Section IEEE along with its Life Member and Consultants Network affinity groups cordially invite all IEEE members and their guests to attend our annual ballpark social event. This year’s event will be on Saturday, September 7th. The suite will be open at 5:30pm, and game will start at 7:00pm. The Whitecaps will be hosting the Lansing LugNuts, a Class A minor league baseball team affiliated with the Oakland A's. We will be watching and enjoying some great food in the ballpark's beautiful Super Suite. Come join us, enjoy catered food, and watch the game in either air-conditioned comfort or on the outdoor balcony! This social is free to all grades of IEEE members, including students. However, our combo suite only has space for about 75 people, so sign up ASAP because tickets will be issued on a first come first serve basis. This will be a great opportunity to meet your fellow West Michigan engineering colleagues in a relaxed social setting. Besides admittance to the game, we will have free food and drink (non-alcoholic) in the suite (alcoholic beverages are available for purchase in the park). We have again chosen a Saturday game to minimize work conflicts, so we hope you can join us! While this event is free for all IEEE members, there is a small fee of $20 for everyone else. Again, attendance is limited to 75 so please register ASAP. Registered members (and paid guests if applicable) will receive their tickets on game day at the park from 5:30pm to 6:55pm at the IEEE table in front of the main entrance. If the ball game is rained out, everyone will have the opportunity to attend a rescheduled game or get a full refund from the Section. There is no refund for no-shows the night of the ballgame or failure to cancel. You may add additional guests at any time (check first with Chuck on the day of the game). Just register again and use your phone number and E-mail each time so we will know which guests are yours (even if we can’t already tell by last names). If your company would like to join our West Michigan section in hosting our 2024 Whitecaps Ballpark Social, we would love to have your help. Brought to you by IEEE Nebraska Section's IAS and PES Technical Chapters. The evening will begin with a thirty minute networking session at 5:30pm followed by dinner and the Update on Electric Transportation Update presentation at approximately 6:30pm. We have previously learned: The current electric vehicle “renaissance” began over a century ago with one in every three automobiles sold in America being battery powered. The first motorized vehicle to go faster than 60 miles per hour was electric. Ferdinand Porsche’s first car was electric. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison collaborated on electric cars. Now it seems we’ve come full circle as the likes of Volkswagen, Ford, GM, and Nissan all try to catch up with Tesla. The performance of modern Electric Vehicles is significantly better than that of earlier EVs. The higher energy storge and power output of Li Ion batteries is perhaps the most important contributor, but several other improved electrical components have also contributed significantly. These include three phase AC motors, high efficiency power electronics in DC to AC inverters, and microcomputers in motor controllers. Performance improving technologies and their introduction in EVs are discussed in this presentation. Experience with modern electric cars will be available for attendees. NOTE: PDH's AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST Co-sponsored by: Rebecca Furtado - IEEE Nebraska Section Chair Speaker(s): Dr. Don Cox, Agenda: 5:30pm - Sign in and networking 6:00pm - Dinner starts and EV Presentation follows 7:30pm - Q & A Parker's Smokehouse, 16880 Highway 6, Ashland, Nebraska, United States, 68003

Using Open Source to Accelerate Sustainability Initiatives Addressing climate change and sustainability is one of the most urgent concerns we face. A key step in addressing these concerns is for organizations to measure, analyze and document their carbon emissions and climate risks. Sustainability and climate reporting is effectively being mandated by both governments and industry. This reporting, however, often requires significant investments in time and resources to design, develop and implement. The right data must be found, prepared and organized to support for instance, calculation of the Greenhouse Gas emissions. This can be a significant challenge. Open source projects, such as Egeria, can play a significant role in accelerating these initiatives. In this talk you will learn about: - What are some of the key standards and programs for measuring and reporting on Sustainability - Acceleration through Open Source projects - An overview of Egeria and it can jumpstart sustainability projects - A deeper look at the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and Carbon Accounting showing how Egeria can help organizations establish and deliver trusted sustainability reports About Speaker: Dan is a founder of(https://pdr-associates.com/). – a consultancy specializing in accelerating digital transformations through innovative data architectures and governance. Thinks have really changed in the 140 years since the leading minds in electronics met to share ideas at what was to become the inaugural meeting of the predecessor of IEEE. What a different world the Edisons and Teslas and Westinghouses and other engineers of that day would find in the technology of the Twenty-First Century. One of the areas where technology is rapidly outpacing our ability to absorb new material, and control or legislate it is Artificial Intelligence. Join us in Celebrating 140 years of IEEE AND the fifteen anniversary of IEEE Day with a look into Artificial Intelligence: Where we were, where we are now, and where we may be going. Despite these unprecedented advancements, the holy grail of enabling fully autonomous machine intelligence remains far from our grasp. One key challenge is the lack of performant and efficient hardware implementation, especially in the case of embedded/edge devices with rich sensory inputs yet stringent resource constraints. In this talk, I will present our work to tackle this challenge from a unique angle that leverages information processing ability innate in the analog/mixed-signal (AMS) domain by embedding AI computation directly inside the pixel circuits, delivering much-improved performance and efficiency. I will first introduce our design of in-sensor learned compressive acquisition (LeCA) and then talk about a novel in-sensor architecture that supports real-time gaze tracking, a key primitive in AR/VR applications. Finally, I will present CamJ, a first-of-its-kind energy modeling framework that empowers designers to navigate the large algorithm-hardware co-design space of computational image sensors.
