The rapid proliferation of data centers is placing unprecedented strain on power grid operations. This presentation examines the energy demand challenges data centers pose to grid infrastructure, including skyrocketing electricity consumption, peak load pressures, and the risk of grid instability in capacity-constrained regions. We explore how data centers’ 24/7 power requirements exacerbate grid reliability issues and drive up operational costs for utilities and operators alike. Solutions such as demand response programs, microgrids, optimized load balancing, and small modular reactors (SMRs) will be discussed to mitigate these challenges. By aligning data center energy needs with grid capabilities, operators can enhance reliability, reduce costs, and support sustainable grid operations. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📍 Location: WebEx 📆 Date: December 11th, 2025 🕙 Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM 🧑🎓 Open to all Meeting link: https://ieeemeetings.webex.com/ieeemeetings/j.php?MTID=md38157f984ea1334d177ff6aa426add8 Meeting number: 2534 798 0824 Meeting password: mFm2mwyEx92 Join from a video system or application Dial [email protected] You can also dial 173.243.2.68 and enter your meeting number. Tour of Fox Energy Center 310 E. Frontage Rd., Kaukauna, WI www.wisconsinpublicservice.com/company/fox-energy The Fox Energy Center, located between Wrightstown and Kaukauna, is home to a natural gas-fueled electric generating plant that serves WPS customers. The plant is a combined-cycle power generation facility capable of producing 620 megawatts. The combined-cycle power plant comprises three generating units. Two units are General Electric 7FB combustion gas turbine generators, each rated 235 MW. The third unit captures waste heat from the gas turbines to produce steam, which then drives a Toshiba steam turbine generator. This combined-cycle process uses both combustion and steam turbines, allowing the plant to generate more electricity from the same amount of fuel consumed by a simple-cycle process. The facility is also notable for using recycled process water from a nearby sewage treatment plant in its cooling towers, conserving fresh water resources. Construction of the power plant began in November 2002 and went into operation in 2005. Since 2005, WPS has purchased 500 megawatts of electric capacity from the Fox Energy Center. WPS purchased the power plant outright from Fox Energy Center LLC, owned by subsidiaries of Tyr Energy, Inc. and General Electric, on March 28, 2013, for a total purchase price of $440 million. Arrival and Entry Plan to arrive about 10 minutes before the tour starts and line vehicles up on the right side of the driveway near the guard shack. Once everyone is in line, notify the guard. He will hold the gate and let the group through, directing us where to park. We will then gather in the administration building. Much of this tour is outdoors. Dress warmly to stay comfortable on this December evening. [] You are all invited to attend in person the IEEE Southeastern Michigan Section Monthly ExCom (Executive Committee) Meeting (every 2nd Thursday of the month) usually at 630pm, but for this holiday season it will be held at 6:00 PM EST/EDT (This specific meeting is F2F). Besides dinner with our officer colleagues from fellow and sister technical professional society members of the ESD (Engineering Society of Detroit), we can share stories, discuss potential areas of collaboration and possible joint events, of course at the same time promoting bonhomie and good spirits. We will share with all the IEEE SE Michigan Section mission objectives, guidance, direction, as well as all the chapter/affinity groups/student branches and section committee reports, events, plans, opportunities to assist each other and help create value for our members. All IEEE members (and their guests) are welcome to attend, but they do need to register in order to have an accurate dinner headcount! Co-sponsored by: Sharan Kalwani Speaker(s): Christopher Johnson, Sharan Kalwani Agenda: Published on google drive - link sent each month via email to ALL the chapter/Affinity Group/Student Branch/Committee chairs. Ensure you are listed on the ExCom listserv as well (contact [email protected] in case of doubt) 6:00 PM to 630 PM - Introductions, Appetizers and Assorted Beverages 630 PM to 7:00 PM - Annual Review of the IEEE SE Michigan 2024 7:00 PM - 830 PM - Dinner and networking Dinner (BUFFET STYLE) Menu: - Varied Appetizers: Falafel + hummus (classic + roasted red pepper). tabbouleh. greek olives + pickled veggies. served with toasted pita. - Dinner - Vegetarian Grape Leaves main course, Grecian Chicken main course, Cilantro Lime Rice, Oven Roasted Potatoes, Salad, - Dessert - Petite Platter, Fresh Fruit & Baklava - Soda Pop, Coffee Room: 4th floor, Bldg: Engineering Society of Detroit, 20700 Civic Center Drive, Southfield, Michigan, United States
