Prediction by the Numbers: documentary

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/499144

[]We proudly present the Documentary: NOVA: "Prediction by the Numbers" Summary: Predictions underlie nearly every aspect of our lives, from sports, politics, and medical decisions to the morning commute. With the explosion of digital technology, the internet, and “big data,” the science of forecasting is flourishing. But why do some predictions succeed spectacularly while others fail abysmally? And how can we find meaningful patterns amidst chaos and uncertainty? From the glitz of casinos and TV game shows to the life-and-death stakes of storm forecasts and the flaws of opinion polls that can swing an election, “Prediction by the Numbers” explores stories of statistics in action. Yet advances in machine learning and big data models that increasingly rule our lives are also posing big, disturbing questions. How much should we trust predictions made by algorithms when we don’t understand how they arrive at them? And how far ahead can we really forecast? AFTER the movie - we can have a brief discussion session. NOTE: You must supply your own soda pop and popcorn! :-) Trivia may also follow, so bring your Jeopardy hats too Co-sponsored by: Subramaniam Ganesan Agenda: 6:00 PM - Welcome and Introductions, Chapter business update; (on your own) Pizza, Popcorn and Soda Pop 6:15 PM - Documentary 7:15 PM - End of Documentary; Start of Q & A; Group Discussion 7:30 PM - Wrap Up Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/499144

DISTINGUISHED LECTURER Talk: AI in Wireless Networks, 3GPP Standardization Status and Challenges (HYBRID)

Room: Mann Hall, Bldg: Medical Sciences Building, 300 3rd Ave SW, Rochester, Minnesota, United States, 55902, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/499183

Machine learning (ML) and AI will play a key role in the development of 6G networks. Network virtualization and network software solutions in 5G networks can support data-driven intelligent and automated networks to some extent and this trend will grow in 5G-advanced networks. In 6G networks, network intelligence is envisioned to be end-to-end, and air interface is envisioned to be AI-native. The user equipment (UE) devices need to be smarter, environment and context aware, and capable of running ML algorithms. The mobile networks standardization bodies including 3GPP have started discussing AI solutions in almost all working groups. This talk will give a brief overview of various activities in 3GPP in this domain with focus on the main challenges in developing machine learning solutions in 5G use cases and emphasize with a case study how deployment of these solutions is much harder in a real network as compared to theoretical performance evaluation. Further, a vision for paradigm shift from AI-as-an-enabler to AI-Native air-interface will be provided for 6G networks. Speaker(s): Majid Butt, Ph.D. Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00 Social half hour to grab food and drink 7:00 - 8:00 Technical talk Room: Mann Hall, Bldg: Medical Sciences Building, 300 3rd Ave SW, Rochester, Minnesota, United States, 55902, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/499183
