Room: Room 4164, Bldg: Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID), We will meet on the first floor of WID near the double elevators. , 330 North Orchard Street, Madison, Wisconsin, United States, 53715

IEEE Madison’s November 7th 3 pm tour is at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery’s Saha Lab where they use CRISPR technology for addressing inherited retinal disorders. We’ll tour the lab, see a CRISPR machine and see how the output is used. Welcome to the CRISPR Vision Program at the University of Wisconsin- Madison! UW – Madison is a part of the Somatic Cell Genome Editing (SCGE) Consortium funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We're innovating non-viral gene editing therapies for inherited retinal disorders. Our work aims to bring the groundbreaking potential of CRISPR technology to those affected by these diseases. The labs focus lies in overcoming the limitations of existing viral delivery systems and introducing novel, non-viral treatments for inherited eye diseases, particularly those affecting the retinal pigment epithelium. As a part of the SCGE Consortium, the lab is working in a community dedicated to developing safe and effective gene editing methods to treat genetic diseases in somatic cells. TITLE: Navigating Cybersecurity and Systemic Risk in a Rapidly Advancing Technological Landscape Program: In our globally interconnected world, the rapid advancement and intersection of technologies present both unprecedented opportunities and significant risks. This presentation will explore the ethical misuse, systemic risk, and cascading failures that arise as technology evolves faster than regulation and current cybersecurity measures. Key topics include the threat landscape of adversarial AI, the potential for quantum computing to crack encryption and expose secrets, and the unintended consequences of technological progress. Attendees will gain insights into the challenges and strategies for defending against these emerging threats in the coming years and decades. About the Speaker: Dr. John D. Johnson is a cybersecurity executive with over 30 years of experience. He is the founder/CEO of Aligned Security and Docent Institute, which promotes cybersecurity education and outreach to underserved communities. John earned his Ph.D. in Physics from UT-Austin. He has experience across all sectors, starting at Los Alamos National Laboratory and subsequently as a security leader at large enterprises, including John Deere, Deloitte, and Campbell Soup Company. He has developed and taught numerous cybersecurity courses online and in person for colleges over 20 years. The Technical Publishing World from Academia to Industry

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/433533

Publish or perish is often mentioned as a requirement for tenure, but the need to publish goes far beyond academia requirements. In this talk, I go through the definition of publishing and how broad the technical publishing world is from technical research journals to industry white papers. Topics include the difference between traditional publishing versus self-publishing, industry versus academia, and journals versus books. Finally, some general suggestions for technical writing are presented, such as "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
