Notice of the 2024 Chapter election cycle for SEM R4. Greetings, It's time to conduct elections for our Chapter and Societies. Please contact me if you are interested in becoming an officer or want to help. This year IEEE has mandated that elections are to be conducted within each chapter and not the sole responsibility of the Section. To this end, each chapter will need to rally an election committee to seek out candidates and to conduct the election. Please see the list of open positions below. All Geo-units (Affinity Groups and Technical Chapters) officers remain as single year terms as shown below. Affinity Groups (all 4) and Chapters (all 18) Chair – assume office on January 1 for a one year term. Vice-Chair – assume office on January 1 for a one year term. Secretary – assume office on January 1 for a one year term. Treasurer – assume office on January 1 for a one year term. Our chapter elections will open on 5 August and close on 5 September. Plan to invite volunteers to seek election. Plan to invite volunteers to become part of the elections committee for the chapter. Duties will be to gather nominee names to add to the ballot below. Event Dates: Sat-Sun, August 24-25, 2024 Location: Huskies Student Union, Univ of Washington (in-person); and via MS Teams (for all talks on Saturday) Cost: $20 for IEEE Members, $60 for non-members (by Aug 9th); 25% more after Aug 9th. Information and Reservations: (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/) Summary: This is a major IEEE event with top-level leaders from all the major AI companies. Plus, for those coming to Seattle, a second full day of (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/workshop/), including a (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/nvidia-llm-rag-training/) (WTL), (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/aws-workshop-genai/) (WTE), (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/data-engineering-and-genai/) (WTF), and (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/unlocking-the-power-of-llms/) (WTI), and more, aimed at helping new and current CS engineers and programmers to evaluate moving into this exciting new field. The latest McKinsey Global Survey on AI in May of 2024 concludes that 2023 was the year the world discovered generative AI (GenAI), and 2024 is the year organizations truly began using — and deriving business value — from this new technology. An incredible 65 percent of respondents report that their organizations are regularly using GenAI, which is nearly double the percentage from the previous survey just ten months before. Respondents’ expectations for gen AI’s impact remain as high, with three-quarters predicting that gen AI will lead to significant or disruptive change in their industries in the years ahead. Oracle is laying off 4,250 current employees, and plans to hire 4,000 AI specialists. Mastering AI tools and techniques is not just about keeping pace with technology — it’s also about leveraging these advanced resources to fill in knowledge gaps, enhance decision-making, and drive productivity in the next phase of your career. Learning to utilize AI at our Seattle Workshops can significantly boosts your capacity to deliver increased business outcomes, making you more valuable and a strategic asset to your organization. See especially the in-depth hands-on sessions from Nvidia and AMD. Get details from the (https://attend.ieee.org/newera/) Agenda: Come to witness how AI ignites an Innovation Renaissance in the 21st century. Don’t miss the once in a lifetime opportunity to hear historical AI breakthroughs for Perpetual and Boundless AI for Humanity directly from world thought leaders.
