The world of AI is moving rapidly and tools such as ChatGPT are already producing fascinating results. In this talk, we will go behind the curtains to explain what AI models are, to compare AI programs with traditional programs and to talk about the unique hardware that is being developed to accelerate AI workloads. The goal is to explain how AI hardware and software differs from the programming that many are familiar with. Finally, the experience of agentic coding, which is co-developing software with AI agents, will be discussed. Spoiler, it is already amazing. Machine learning (ML) and AI will play a key role in the development of 6G networks. Network virtualization and network software solutions in 5G networks can support data-driven intelligent and automated networks to some extent and this trend will grow in 5G-advanced networks. In 6G networks, network intelligence is envisioned to be end-to-end, and air interface is envisioned to be AI-native. The user equipment (UE) devices need to be smarter, environment and context aware, and capable of running ML algorithms. The mobile networks standardization bodies including 3GPP have started discussing AI solutions in almost all working groups. This talk will give a brief overview of various activities in 3GPP in this domain with focus on the main challenges in developing machine learning solutions in 5G use cases and emphasize with a case study how deployment of these solutions is much harder in a real network as compared to theoretical performance evaluation. Further, a vision for paradigm shift from AI-as-an-enabler to AI-Native air-interface will be provided for 6G networks. Speaker(s): Majid Butt, Ph.D. Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00 Social half hour to grab food and drink 7:00 - 8:00 Technical talk Room: Mann Hall, Bldg: Medical Sciences Building, 300 3rd Ave SW, Rochester, Minnesota, United States, 55902, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/499183

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health is entering a new era. While much attention has been given to its role in clinics—enhancing diagnostics, imaging, and decision support—the real home run lies beyond hospital walls: bringing AI into people’s homes to support prevention, early detection, and continuous care. In this Distinguished IEEE SPS lecture, we will see how this transition is becoming reality. Advances in AI and large models, multimodal sensing, speech and language processing, affective and behavioral computing, and wearable intelligence are enabling AI systems that can monitor health unobtrusively, detect subtle changes early, and deliver personalized recommendations—right where people live their daily lives. By shifting the focus from treatment to prevention, AI has the potential to reduce disease burden, improve quality of life, and extend healthy years of living. Yet, realizing this promise requires more than technological breakthroughs. We will discuss how to ensure transparency, privacy, and fairness when AI moves into the intimacy of the home, and how to align innovation with the rigor and trustworthiness expected in world-class clinical settings such as the Mayo Clinic. We will also explore how the strengths of clinical excellence and AI innovation can build a health system where care is proactive, patient-centered, and seamlessly integrated into everyday life. By highlighting both transformative opportunities and pressing challenges, this talk offers a vision for the future of AI in health—where the clinic’s standards meet the home’s realities, and prevention becomes the true frontier of care. Speaker(s): Björn W. Schuller, Ph.D., Agenda: 6:30 - 7:00 Social half hour to grab food and drink 7:00 - 8:00 Technical talk Room: Mann Hall, Bldg: Medical Sciences Building, 300 3rd Ave SW, Rochester, Minnesota, United States, 55902, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/480126 |
