In the era of distributed cloud-native architectures, the vulnerability of centralized certificate and identity management systems represents a single point of failure that can lead to catastrophic system-wide outages. This session presents a novel framework for an Autonomic Zero-Trust Identity Mesh, derived from real-world implementations within global financial infrastructures handling trillions in daily transaction volume. The core of this contribution is a decentralized "Cert Store" logic and automated rotation pipeline that eliminates manual intervention in high-scale environments. We analyze how integrating AI-driven anomaly detection within the identity layer can proactively identify and isolate compromised service identities before they propagate through the mesh. The discussion will focus on the technical architecture required to balance "Strict Zero-Trust" enforcement with the ultra-low latency requirements of core banking systems. By moving from reactive patch management to a proactive, self-healing identity mesh, this framework provides a blueprint for securing the critical "Digital Backbone" of the global financial ecosystem. In the rapidly evolving landscape of financial technology, the migration of mission-critical systems to the public cloud has transitioned from a technical upgrade to a fundamental business necessity. Financial institutions today face the dual challenge of managing unprecedented transaction volumes while defending against increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity threats. This session provides a deep dive into the strategic re-engineering required to transition legacy financial infrastructure into agile, cloud-native architectures that support real-time processing and enterprise-grade resilience. Drawing on extensive experience leading large-scale cloud migration initiatives and integrating complex e-commerce ecosystems, this talk explores the technical frameworks used to modernize core banking services—including fraud detection systems, rewards integration layers, and automated payment platforms—without disrupting business continuity. We will examine the decomposition of monolithic legacy systems into scalable microservices using container orchestration and serverless computing, ensuring that platforms can scale dynamically to meet global demand. A central focus of this discussion is the implementation of a polyglot persistence strategy. Attendees will learn how to architect data environments that balance relational databases for ACID-compliant transactional processing with NoSQL platforms to handle high-velocity, unstructured data. Furthermore, we will detail the engineering of real-time data streaming pipelines using technologies like Kafka and Spark to support the low-latency requirements essential for instant loan authorizations and travel fraud analytics. Beyond performance, the session addresses the critical pillar of Security by Design within the public cloud. We will discuss the integration of automated encryption, zero-trust access controls, and AI-powered anomaly detection directly into the cloud fabric to identify and mitigate fraud patterns in real-time. Finally, the talk will highlight the importance of FinOps, demonstrating how to embed cost-optimization as a non-functional requirement through automated resource right-sizing and visibility tools. Key Takeaways for Attendees: Phased Migration Strategies: How to develop incremental roadmaps that mitigate operational risk and preserve data integrity during a public cloud transition. Secure Ecosystem Integration: Architecting event-driven bridges between internal banking systems and global retail partners. Automated Governance: Leveraging Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines to ensure consistent, compliant, and rapid deployment of financial services. Physical AI at the Edge: Autonomous Drones, Embedded Vision, and Hardware-Optimized Learning Edge AI is redefining how intelligent systems operate in real-world, bandwidth-limited, and safety-critical environments. Rather than relying on centralized cloud infrastructure, next-generation autonomous platforms demand low-latency, energy-efficient, and hardware-aware intelligence deployed directly at the edge. This guest lecture presents a systems-level perspective on designing edge-native AI architectures spanning three converging domains: autonomous drone platforms, embedded computer vision, and lightweight large language models (LLMs). We will examine how drone autonomy benefits from onboard perception-action loops, real-time multi-modal sensing, and closed-loop control frameworks that operate without persistent cloud connectivity. The talk further explores edge-optimized vision pipelines for agricultural and environmental monitoring, including model compression, quantization, spectral-RGB fusion, and real-time deployment on resource-constrained hardware such as Jetson, FPGA, and heterogeneous SoCs. Finally, we discuss the emerging role of LLMs in physical AI systems, not as chat interfaces, but as structured reasoning engines integrated with robotic sensing and decision pipelines. Hardware-aware optimization strategies, including pruning, mixed-precision inference, memory- latency tradeoffs, and accelerator-centric design, will be highlighted as key enablers of scalable deployment. This invited talk concludes by outlining a unifying design framework for building autonomous, interpretable, and deployable edge intelligence systems across agriculture, environmental monitoring, and cyber-physical domains. All are welcome! You do not need to be a member to attend. If you are interested and unable to attend, please register and a recording will be sent out after the event. Zoom link: Join Zoom Meeting https://uic.zoom.us/j/3750177436?pwd=YktNd1dheHQ5a05kUFlnakV0d0JrQT09 Title 100-300 GHz Wireless: transistors, ICs, systems Biography Mark Rodwell holds the Doluca Family Endowed Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSB and directs the SRC/DARPA Center for Converged TeraHertz Communications and Sensing. His research group develops nm and THz transistors, and high-frequency integrated circuits and systems. Prof. Rodwell received the 2010 IEEE Sarnoff Award, the 2012 Marconi Prize Paper Award, the 1997 IEEE Microwave Prize, the 2009 IEEE IPRM Conference Award, and the 1998 European Microwave Conference Microwave Prize. Abstract We describe the opportunities, and the research challenges, presented in the development of 100-300GHz wireless communications and imaging systems. In such links, short wavelengths permit massive spatial multiplexing both for network nodes and point-point links, permitting aggregate transmission capacities approaching 1Tb/s. 100-300GHz radar imaging systems can provide thousands of image pixels and sub-degree angular resolution from small apertures, supporting foul-weather driving and aviation. Challenges include the mm-wave IC designs, the physical design of the front-end modules, the complexity of the back-end digital beamformer required for spatial multiplexing, and, for imaging, the development of system architectures requiring far fewer RF channels than the number of image pixels. We will describe transistor development, IC design, and system design, and describe our efforts to develop 140GHz massive MIMO wireless hubs, and 210GHz and 280GHz MIMO backhaul links.
