Utility-Scale Battery Storage – From Fundamentals to Field Lessons

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are rapidly becoming core infrastructure for a decarbonized grid. In this session, Hassan Althuwaini from RWE Clean Energy will discuss the fundamentals of BESS technology and share insights from his experience designing large-scale projects across the U.S. The presentation will cover the latest advances in battery chemistries, inverter integration, and system design, along with real-world lessons on degradation, augmentation, and safety.

Hassan Althuwaini, RWE Clean Energy

Hassan Althuwaini is a BESS Design Engineer at RWE Clean Energy in Chicago, where he works on utility-scale storage projects. His role spans technology evaluation, detailed design, and construction support for both standalone and hybrid solar + storage systems. Hassan holds a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where his research covered control for heterogeneous BESS. He is an IEEE author and member, with publications on anomaly detection and inverter optimization.
