Implementation of Large Capacity HVDC Transmission Lines in North America
This presentation will describe the development of multiple, large scale, HVDC transmission line projects implementing large capacity HVDC ties in North America between the Eastern and Western interconnections and others. Grid United is an independent transmission company aiming to develop next-generation energy infrastructure to create a more resilient and efficient electric system to the benefit of all consumers. This presentation will present the important role that HVDC will play in the future development of an integrated North American transmission grid. Both the technical and non-technical challenges that need to be addressed for successful project implementation will be presented. Grid United seeks out projects that few other developers are equipped to take on and is determined to develop projects that have a historic impact on America’s power grid. Grid United prioritizes stakeholder engagement with the goal of fostering a positive relationship with landowners and communities, building organic support for their projects. Mike will describe the unconventional routing and acquisition strategy that Grid United uses to develop projects faster than the traditional utility/RTO planning process.
Mike Spector, Grid United
As Director of Transmission and Interconnection, Mike Spector is responsible for all aspects of transmission planning and interconnection study efforts at Grid United. Prior to joining Grid United, Mike served as Grid Manager at Mainstream Renewable Power, where he led all grid interconnection planning and risk mitigation for offshore wind farm development in North America. Mike previously served as GE Renewable Energy’s Senior Engineering Manager leading a global team to drive project execution and meet grid interconnection requirements for over 100 new and repowered onshore wind farms. Mike spent a total of 11 years at GE, including work as a systems engineer developing utility-scale battery energy storage systems. Before joining GE, Mike spent over 10 years at electric utility Central Hudson Gas & Electric with roles in substation design, transmission planning and energy efficiency.
Mike is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New York. Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Binghamton University, an MBA from Mount Saint Mary College and a master’s degree in power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
