Battery Storage Applications in Power Systems Including Recent Updates on Technology and Market Use Cases

Project Engineers from Invenergy will join IEEE to discuss their experience developing, designing, and constructing battery energy storage systems (BESS). Reza Talieh and Jim Kennedy will share details on recent technology improvements, economics of BESS projects, different applications and use-cases, and how to safely operate BESS projects. Energy Storage moves fast and this presentation will especially focus on how the technology and markets have changed in just the past 3 years. Join us to learn more about what it is like using your engineering skills to build a BESS project!

Reza Talieh & Jim Kennedy, Invenergy

Reza Talieh (he/him) is a Project Engineer at Invenergy who is currently working on a 110 MW x 440
MWh storage project in Wisconsin. Reza is the battery safety SME at Invenergy and works with
American Clean Power and NFPA 855 Task Groups on safety messaging and evolving the fire code. Reza
has a bachelors and masters degree in Chemical Engineering from USC and Stanford respectively where
he began his research into lithium-ion and long duration energy storage technologies. As a California
transplant, he enjoys indoor bouldering to avoid Chicago’s winter.

Jim Kennedy (he/him) is a Project Engineer at Invenergy who is currently working on a 50MW x 200MWh project near Phoenix, AZ. Jim also focuses on Invenergy’s decommissioning and recycling activities for their battery projects. He has a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from UW-Milwaukee and previously worked for Clarios as a battery manufacturing engineer. Jim is passionate about the environment and combatting climate change, and in his free time he enjoys specialty coffee and hiking the National Parks of the USA.
