HVDC – An Approaching Evolution or Revolution?

This presentation will provide a brief historical perspective of how we reached the present levels of technology, what is the present state of the art, and visions of the future to meet the anticipated demands which are being created by the need to integrate increasing levels of wind energy, while improving the overall flexibility and resilience of power networks.

Neil Kirby, GE Renewable Energy – Grid Solutions

Neil Kirby serves as HVDC Business Development Manager for GE Renewable Energy – Grid Solutions. He graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1983 and started working with GEC in Stafford, England, which evolved through years from GEC Alsthom to Alstom to Areva to Alstom and most recently to GE. He has held many roles in equipment and project engineering in HVDC systems worldwide and lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Neil is a Senior Member of IEEE, Cigre B4 Regular Member for the US National Committee, and is active on several IEEE and Cigre working groups.
